Essential Formulas & Mathematical Definitions

Addition: C_ij = A_ij + B_ij (Defined only when dimensions match)
Scalar Multiplication: (kA)_ij = k · A_ij
(A + B)^T = A^T + B^T | (A^T)^T = A
Trace of Matrix: tr(A) = Σ a_ii (Sum of principal diagonal elements)
Orthogonal Matrix: A · A^T = A^T · A = I ⇒ A⁻¹ = A^T
Idempotent: A² = A | Involutory: A² = I | Nilpotent: Aᵏ = 0

Classification of Matrices

1. Row Matrix (1 × n) & Column Matrix (m × 1). 2. Square Matrix (m = n). 3. Diagonal Matrix (non-diagonal elements are 0). 4. Scalar Matrix (diagonal matrix with equal diagonal elements). 5. Identity Matrix I_n (diagonal elements are 1). 6. Zero/Null Matrix O.

Special Matrix Types & Properties

1. Symmetric: A^T = A. 2. Skew-Symmetric: A^T = -A (diagonal elements are 0). 3. Any square matrix can be uniquely expressed as A = P + Q, where P = 1/2(A + A^T) is symmetric and Q = 1/2(A - A^T) is skew-symmetric.

Elementary Transformations (Operations)

Six operations on a matrix (three row and three column): 1. Interchange of any two rows/columns: R_i ↔ R_j. 2. Multiplication of elements of any row/column by a non-zero scalar: R_i → kR_i. 3. Addition to elements of one row the corresponding elements of another row multiplied by k: R_i → R_i + kR_j.

Exam Day Revision & Problem Solving Checklist

  • ✓Confirm matrices have identical dimensions before adding or subtracting
  • ✓Remember that matrix multiplication is generally not commutative (AB ≠ BA)
  • ✓Diagonal matrix entries off the main diagonal must be strictly 0

High-Yield Exam Strategy & Scoring Tips

Step-by-Step Mark Allocation

Always state the governing principle or formula first, write given values with standard SI units, substitute clearly, and highlight the final numerical answer with units in a box for full step marking.

Common Calculation Traps

Watch for unit prefixes (cm to m, minutes to seconds, g to kg, degrees to radians). In coordinate and ray optics problems, double-check Cartesian sign conventions before computing.

Frequently Asked Exam Questions & Concept Clarifications

What is an identity matrix?

An identity matrix is a square matrix in which all main diagonal elements are 1 and all non-diagonal elements are 0: I · A = A · I = A.

Can two non-zero matrices have a zero product?

Yes, if A = [[0, 1], [0, 0]] and B = [[1, 0], [0, 0]], then AB = [[0, 0], [0, 0]] = O, even though neither A nor B is a null matrix.
